VISUAL SPECTACLE, IMPACT, AND DEDICATION are synonyms for sand sculpting, a new artistic trend which captivates everyone who sees it. The originality and quality of the sculptures, the simplicity of the material, and the close involvement of the public mean that sand sculpting events attract large numbers of visitors, and a great deal of media coverage.
Who we are
Since the beginning of the 90´s, Soportes, S.L. has been dedicated to the promotion of sand sculpting as a new form of art, to transform what was a peripheral art form into an important artistic trend. Sand sculpting allows us to see how simple can be spectacular, and enjoy marvellous works of art through a creative process that uses very basic materials, and it is this very simplicity which makes it a highly diverse art form which can be performed in an infinite number of places. An added attraction of this discipline is that the public can watch the artist at work, which is not the case with traditional sculpting.
Applications and events held
The extremely varied subject-matter of this sculpting medium means that all sand sculpting events arouse great interest. The novelty factor, the involvement of the public, and the artistic quality of the sculptures mean that these events always make a large impact, drawing large numbers of curious spectators.
Furthermore, the appeal of sand sculpting is significantly enhanced by the fact that sand sculptures can be created anywhere, not just on the beach. This has allowed us to arrange numerous promotional events both outdoors and indoors, including places such as shopping centres and a wide range of trade fairs.
Another important facet of this art form is the therapeutic nature of the materials used, since a large mound of sand does not have any type of physical barriers. In fact, for physically handicapped people it can be their own particular workshop where they can work comfortably and create, while doing exercise at the same time. This is what we have learnt from workshops held at schools with children who have motor and mental difficulties.
Master Sand Sculptors International Competition
The Master Sand Sculptors International Competition is a cultural display, which combines artistic, social, leisure, and environmental elements. The event is based on the artistic development, and philosophy, of the Canary Island sculptor Etual Ojeda, recognised as the best sculptor in the world by the Sand Sculpting Academy of the United States (WSSA).
It is a dynamic exhibition where the spectators´ enthusiasm increases as the sculptures start to take shape. The speed at which the sculptures are created wins general admiration, which means it strongly appeals to all types of public. The exhibition has attracted over 200,000 visitors every year, as well as wide media coverage at national and international level.
Each year twelve of the best sand sculptors from around the world come to the event to develop their art, and as a result this competition is now the most artistically renowned event of its kind in the world. (Several photos of sculptures)
This event is unique, and unlike any other sand sculpting event in the world, thanks to several distinguishing differences:
1. The main element is sculpture as art.
2. Each sculptor works on their own, one sculptor for each work of art.
3. The structures and measurements are the same for all the participants.
4. No moulds are used.
The prize-giving jury that judges the sculptures is made up of people who are not part of the event organisation. A popular vote is also held to find the public’s favourite sculpture.
